AT&T has announced that it will officially light up its MediaFLO based mobile TV service on this Sunday, May 4th. To go with the new service launch, AT&T will start offering up the LG Vu and the Samsung Access for sale at its retail locations.
AT&T has said that the LG Vu will be available for a net cost of $299 with a two year agreement, after rebates, and that the Samsung Access will be available for $100 less after rebates. AT&T will initially offer 3 different mobile TV plans to consumers: a $13/mo limited 4 channel plan, a $15/mo basic plan, and a $30/mo 'plus' plan that bundles basic TV service with unlimited web and Cingular Video use. The service is launching in 58 markets across the country.
Since it works on the same MediaFLO network as Verizon Wireless' V CAST TV service, AT&T Mobile TV will offer the same basic suite of channels, with the exception of two exclusive AT&T channels: PIX and CNN Mobile Live. PIX will offer up a variety of films from Sony's archives, and CNN Mobile Live will provide real time access to CNN's 24 hour a day news coverage.
While many competing mobile TV systems, such as MobiTV, work by streaming TV over a regular mobile phone data channel, MediaFLO based devices actually pick up live digital broadcast signals from a dedicated MediaFLO network. With features and user interfaces more like a conventional digital cable set-top box, MediaFLO capable devices often have extendable whip antennas like a portable TV set would have.
More information on the AT&T Mobile TV service will be available at the AT&T Mobile TV website, which goes live on Sunday.
