Adobe this morning announced the Open Screen Project, with the backing of major industry leaders. ARM, Chunghwa Telecom, Cisco, Intel, LG Electronics Inc, Marvell, Motorola, Nokia, NTT Docomo, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics Co, Sony Ericsson Toshiba, and Verizon Wireless are all on board to help Adobe standardize rich internet experience across devices and platforms.
The Open Screen Project will use Adobe's Flash Player and, eventually, Adobe AIR to make it simple for developers and content creators to offer a standard experience regardless of the platform or device being used.
Adobe will be taking several steps in support of this project:
- Removing restrictions on the use of .SWF and .FLV/F4V specifications
- Publishing the device porting layer APIs for Adobe Flash Player
- Publishing the Adobe Flash Cast protocol and AMF protocol for robust data services
- Removing licensing fees for the next major releases of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR for devices
